Chetwynd or 'Catewinde' was a substantial little village in the Doomsday Book with a mill and two fisheries, six ploughmen and land for eight ploughs and its own priest. Although life was hard in 1086 this was a thriving little community with a lord in the manor, villagers and smallholders.
By 1318, although the nearby town of Newport 'Nova Burga' was growing and had already in 1292 been granted a licence to hold a fair, Chetwynd was important enough to be granted its own licence to hold an annual Fair and weekly market by Edward II.
This Fair, which was to be held on the last day of October, was still in existence in 1334 as records show the lay subsidy was worth £106 - not a small sum.

Today, little if anything is left of that Medieval village. Although the name remains it is now a collection of modern houses converted from the estate buildings that were constructed in the 1800's. The manor house, the core of which was the medieval lord's manor, was severely damaged by fire in the 1960's and demolished shortly afterwards. The church, of which the priest recorded in the Domesday Book was the incumbent, is not in its original position. It was rebuilt during the nineteenth century on the other side of the estate.
In 2008 the Medieval Fair was re-created here at Shropshire Lavender in the hamlet of Pickstock(about a mile from Chetwynd) for the first time in nearly 700 years. Ancient traditional skills such as spinning, cloth dyeing, basket weaving, fletching were demonstrated along with herbal medicine and the brutal craft of the barber surgeon.
The Fair will take place on 3rd/4th July 2010
Details for 2010 are being finalised and will be posted as soon as possible.
