LAVENDER DISTILLATION DEMONSTRATION WEEKEND

Joanna or Robin Spencer of Shropshire Lavender, Wellbank Farm, Pickstock will be giving short talks daily on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July (at 2.30 and 4.00 pm) about the history of distilling lavender and its uses.  This includes a replica clay alembic as used in the Middle Ages, with an explanation of how it worked, and how monks and ladies of the household used it to distil not only lavender, but other herbs and many delightful items such as frogs and cowpats!
The demonstration then moves to the 21st century with a live demonstration of the principles of lavender distillation using a small copper still, used by country people in Southern Europe to distil essential oils from herbs.  The talk includes a live distillation of freshly cut lavender (for example, Angustifolia Maillette, Intermedia Grosso or Impress Purple) so you can smell for yourself the distinct and pleasant aromas of freshly distilled essential oil that different varieties of lavender produce.  A fascinating talk that not only puts lavender distillation into historical perspective, but also includes an overview of the many uses of lavender today.
And for the children, we’ve laid out an exciting ‘lavender trail’ around the garden and lavender field, with clues to solve while mum and dad relax amongst the lavender.
And after that, why not visit Arthur’s tea room for a refreshing pot of tea or coffee with home baked lavender and lemon cake, lavender scones with clotted cream or Joanna’s renowned Victoria sponge cake.
ENTRANCE IS FREE FOR ALL.  The lavender fields are at Shropshire Lavender, Wellbank Farm, Pickstock TF10 8AH (just north of Newport – follow the signs from Chetwynd) and  open from 12.am until 5.00 pm both days.
